Hygiene Behaviour Change Coalition (HBCC)
Objectives:
- To address the problem of hand washing in the health care facilities and EPI clinics by providing and installing contact less / feet operated hand washing stations with O&M plan.
- To address shortage of liquid soaps and mask by providing liquid soap making and mask making trainings and start up support to interested and needy for the production which will promote local production of soaps and masks in a near future.
- To support Local Governments to tackle with unexpected arising situation due to COVID-19.
Key Activities:
- Hand washing stations are established at Health Care Facilities and EPI clinics with visual reminder.
- Liquid Soap making training is provided to selected participants in two events.
- Mask making training is provided to selected participants in two events.
- Start up support is provided to two individuals (one from each RM) for liquid soap production.
- Start up support is provided to two individuals (one from each RM) for mask production.
- Hand Washing Materials (Soap, Liquid Soap or Sanitizer) is provided to selected disadvantageous and vulnerable households and families.
- MoUs signed with Palikas, Ward Offices and HFOMC for the regular and sustained usage and maintenance of the HWS.
- Hygiene promotions at the HCF and EPI Clinic periodically.
Expected Result:
Sustainable, inclusive and equitable hygiene facilities are established /provided /promoted in key locations.

| The project successfully installed 50 contactless, foot-operated handwashing stations in 50 public institutions, including health care facilities and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) clinics (25 in each Rural Municipality). Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with the Rural Municipalities, Ward Offices, and Health Facility Operation and Management Committees (HFOMCs) to ensure the regular operation, maintenance, and sustainability of the handwashing stations. Water quality testing was conducted for all 50 handwashing stations, with only one station requiring corrective measures through regular chlorination. | |
| To promote hygiene and prevent the spread of COVID-19, the project distributed hygiene materials, including 500 ml bottles of Lifebuoy liquid hand sanitizer, to 4,914 households through school students in close coordination with the two Rural Municipalities. These interventions significantly improved access to essential hygiene products for vulnerable households and promoted regular handwashing practices at the community level. | |
| The project strengthened local capacity by conducting liquid soap-making training for 78 participants (30 males and 48 females) and mask-making training for 30 participants (12 males and 18 females). The training covered COVID-19 prevention measures, production techniques, quality standards, costing, marketing, and entrepreneurship, enabling participants to acquire practical skills for producing essential hygiene products and supporting local livelihoods. | |
| To promote local entrepreneurship and ensure the sustainable availability of hygiene products, the project provided start-up support to seven entrepreneurs for the local production of liquid soap and reusable masks. Support was provided to five entrepreneurs in Chaunrideurali Rural Municipality (three for liquid soap production and two for mask production) and two entrepreneurs in Bhumlu Rural Municipality (one each for liquid soap and mask production). By March 2021, the supported entrepreneurs had produced 320 liters of liquid soap and 3,100 reusable masks, while 198 liters of liquid soap had been sold in local markets, contributing to improved access to hygiene products and enhanced livelihood opportunities. | |
| Through close coordination with local governments, health facilities, and community stakeholders, the project strengthened institutional capacity for hygiene promotion, improved access to handwashing facilities and hygiene materials, encouraged local production of essential hygiene products, and contributed to reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission in the target communities. |
