Promoting Human Rights of Detainees and Prisoners in Nepal

Objectives:
  • To prevent torture and ill-treatment of detainees and prisoners, and their possible long-term impairments due to imprisonment.
Key Activities:
  • Develop prisoners' and detainees' knowledge of their duties and rights.
  • Support prisoners through personalized support to increase well-being and positive attitude in prison and prepare rehabilitation.
  • Improve management of infirmaries.
  • Support activities to improve infrastructures, especially hygiene facilities.
  • Propose a set of activities for prisoners including hygiene promotion, emergency health, educational, livelihood and socio-cultural and activities.
  • Develop spaces for expression in prison.
  • Design and implement an advocacy campaign for the improvement of living conditions and treatment in prison on the basis of the model of intervention developed by this Action.
  • Workshops and consultations with government stakeholders and National Human Rights Commission on the implementation of legal framework and reforms required.
Expected Results:
Strengthened knowledge and capacity of prison authorities and law enforcement bodies to implement minimum standards of detention and imprisonment.
Increased access of detainees and prisoners to knowledge about their rights and to essential services to ensure decent living conditions.
Appropriate policy decisions made by government to prevent torture and ill-treatment and address its consequences.

Major Achievements:

Date Title
Carried out activities implementation for increased access of detainees and prisoners to knowledge about their rights and to essential services to ensure decent living conditions under which 12 rounds of orientations benefitting 172 Detainees and Prisoners were carried out.
52 Detainees and Prisoners have been provided with legal and paralegal support.
Psychosocial counseling has been provided to 270 Detainees and Prisoners.
Support of Health Clinic Equipment and Materials, Support of First Aid Medicine and improvement of infrastructures was done.
Free health camps have been carried out along with hygiene promotion, emergency health, educational, livelihood and socio-cultural activities.
Livelihood improvement cook training of 390 hours was provided to 25 detainees and prisoners.
Developed space of expression for Prisoners and Detainees.
We coordinated with District Court and Prison Office to conduct judges' visit.
We organized allocation and cultural program through socio-cultural activities where around 244 prisoners/detainees had participated is the program.
We supported around 256 knowledgeable books of various genres.
We organized Eye, dental and health checkup free health camp inside the Prison Office, Kavrepalanchok for 85 prisoners with eye checkup of 57 prisoners, dental checkup of 72 prisoners, general checkup of 28 prisoners and counseling of Physio-therapy to 13 prisoners.
We organized Eye, dental and health checkup free health camp inside the Prison Office, Ramechhap for 177 prisoners with eye checkup of 119 prisoners, dental checkup of 39 prisoners, general checkup of 103 prisoners and counseling of Physio-therapy to 30 prisoners.
