Foundations for the Future (FFTF)
Project Summary:
Access to Safe drinking water and Sanitation is known to have significant beneficial impact on the health of the children in the school and community both. Safe drinking water and adequate sanitation are the basic right of every citizen.
Chaunrideurali is one of the rural municipalities of Kavrepalanchok district, which is located 80 km east of Kathmandu in a rural setting have low access to the healthy WASH environment due to the lack of the toilets, drinking water and good hygiene. The Project ‘Sanitation Trailblazer: Resilient Children in Nepal (STRCN) was recently implemented in schools of Chaunrideurali with the prime motive to enhance DRR and WASH behaviours in schools and to support rural municipality to incorporate in planning process. However, even after the satisfactory completion of the project, schools are still lacking the capacity for sustainable management of the WASH facilities. This is seen mainly due to lack of physical WASH infrastructures in schools and due to lack of proper adaptation of WASH in school in planning and policies of Rural Municipality.
In response to the above conditions, WaterAid Nepal (WAN) planned to work in 33 schools of Chaunrideurali Rural Municipality to encourage children and schools by developing the healthy learning environment with development of healthy WASH environment including construction of Inclusive WASH facilities in schools by increasing the capacity for sustaining the WASH management facilities in schools. The project planned to train Students, school authorities and management committees to promote and enhance capacity in WASH resilience, Sustainable WASH and sensitizing the rural municipality for adopting WASH in school procedure including WASH resilience characteristics was termed ‘Foundation for the Future (FFTF)’. This project, supported by WAN, was implemented through partner organization ‘Civic forum for sustainable development (Civic Forum)’ with the planned project period of July, 2022 till June, 2024.
Objectives:
- Students and teachers of Chaunrideurali have improved learning environment through good hygiene practices and implementation of WASH related plan and policies.
- Schools of Chaunrideurali municipality adopt WASH in school procedure including WASH resilience characteristics.
- Students and teachers of Chaunrideurali have access to safe water, improved sanitation and good hygiene facilities and Capacity building of schools for the sustainable management of WASH facilities.
- School children, teachers, management committees are aware on WASH in school procedure including WASH resilience characteristics.
- Rural municipality is capacitated to ensure WASH in school procedure including WASH resilience characteristics in schools, even in the face of future disasters.
Key Activities:
- Assess the status of WASH facilities in the schools, technical survey for detail design.
- Construct inclusive drinking water points.
- Construct inclusive toilets.
- Construct inclusive hand washing stations.
- Demonstration of Rainwater Harvesting in School.
- Retaining structures for slope stabilization in school.
- Support WASH-related materials, equipment required for maintaining hygienic environment of WASH facilities in school.
- Train school students of senior classes on water quality.
- Train community operation and maintenance workers and school administration including school support staff for construction, operation and management of WASH facilities in schools.
- Sensitize school students on proper use of constructed WASH facilities in the schools.
- Train child club members on importance of WASH and their leadership roles to promote WASH related behaviours.
- Sensitize SMC/PTA members on water quality, waste management in schools.
- Train technical unit of RM on technical design aspects of inclusive WASH facilities in School.
- Continue hygiene sessions in the schools with complementary promotional activities.
- Refresher Training on past learning of WASH Resilience and DRR.
- Training to teachers and management committees on national WASH in school guideline with focus on WASH resilience.
- Training to child club members on WASH in Schools Procedure including WASH resilience characteristics.
- Training to focal teachers and school health nurse on MHM package and roll out the package in respective schools for creating MHM friendly environment in schools.
- Periodic assessment and review of WASH in SP indicators.
- Conduct periodic interaction with LGs at the leadership of Child Club (Baal kachahari).
- Mark celebration days related to WASH like WWD, MHD, WTD, etc.
- Organize WASH related events in schools (Water Quality, Hygiene Demonstration; Inclusive WASH facilities) by engaging parents, community people and local media.
- Outreach visit to the community engaging school students and teachers.
- Refresher Training on past learning of WASH Resilience and DRR.
- Training and sensitization to local municipal government representatives on WASH in School Procedure including WASH resilience characteristics in schools.
- Technical support to Rural Municipality to incorporate WASH in Schools Procedure in their planning process (includes Review existing practices).
- Workshop to review progress of WASH in Schools activities and plan forward.
- Joint monitoring with other stakeholders including Local Government (LG) representative.
